Microsoft Introduces Kin, Enters Smartphone Fray

In a San Francisco event today, Microsoft finally unveiled its much rumored line of mobile phones. Code-named Pink, the phones will officially be called Kin.

Microsoft Kin One

The phones — manufactured by Sharp – will be exclusive to Verizon Wireless in the U.S. beginning in May.

From Microsoft’s announcement:

There are two models called KIN ONE and KIN TWO. Both phones feature a touch screen and slide-out keyboard. ONE is small and compact, making it a perfect fit for a pocket and to operate with one hand. TWO has a larger screen and keyboard, in addition to more memory, a higher resolution camera, and the ability to record high-definition video. The 5 and 8 megapixel cameras in ONE and TWO, respectively, are designed for use in low light with image stabilization and a bright LumiLED flash.

We weren’t able to attend today’s event, but WSJ, CNBCand Engadget, among others, have in-depth coverage.

Update with some initial reaction from the Street: Jefferies analyst Katherine Egbert says the intro of the “youth-oriented” phones are “not a huge event for the stock. But today’s announcement, coming one month after the WinPho7 OS debut, indicates Microsoft is increasingly serious about the mobile market.”

Microsoft shares closed down two cents to $30.32.
