Apple: No Cuts To iPhone, Says Wedge

Wedge Partners’s Brian Blair this morning rebuts speculation of the last 48 hours that Apple (AAPL) has delayed or cancelled some production of its iPad or iPhone devices, writing that they are “simply untrue,” according to his knowledge of the supply chain.

Yesterday, there were widely reported concerns of Apple iPhone production cuts, which is simply not true. We believe that supply for iPhone-related materials is tight, but we do not believe there have been any cuts in production for the iPhone this quarter [] While the 4S is seeing significant demand (1 -2 weeks lead time in U.S. and sellouts in Asia), we believe additional strength is coming from the 4 (likely 30% of unit sales) and from the 3GS (likely 10-15% of sales.)

Blair models Apple reporting selling 31 million units this quarter.

As for the iPad, Blair writes that this is old news: he’d already cut his number back in September when modeling this quarter, to 13 million units of iPad production, down from 16 million previously. Blair was among several analysts who did so at the time, you may recall.

Blair thinks that the cut back then was a normal process of Apple adjusting a production plan set earlier in the year to the reality of a “clearer demand picture.”

Blair’s take on the iPhone contrasts with the view of semiconductor analyst Christopher Caso at Susquehanna Financial Group, who wrote this morning there may have been some delays in iPhone production this quarter.
